Love—or Sarang in Korean—is often forgotten and reduced to a mere commodity in our world that struggles with
violence, consumerism, and hatred. Through the works of seven emerging artists, Sarang: Conversation on Love will
communicate love’s power to restore what is lost and encourage viewers to spread love to one another. Organized by
Wellcome Collective, Sarang: Conversation on Love will be on view in Koreatown, NYC from November 10 to
December 1, 2023 and will travel to Seoul in 2024.
The show encompasses a diverse range of artistic forms, incorporating paintings, ceramic installations, and a cinematic component. Artist Calvin Kim introduces a poetic and playful take on his idea of agape love and cycles of love, loss, and rebirth, and Hojung Kim explores the boundless potential of color and the vast range of emotions it may evoke through ceramic works. Filmmaker Kwangmin Lee provides the struggles of juggling different identities and relationships as well as a father’s unconditional love through sacrifice. Nanan Kang examines the permanence of love and spreads affection through her everlasting flowers, and Sarah Lee visualizes loneliness and the value of tranquility through dreamlike landscapes. While Simon Ko highlights the dynamics of human relationships and diverse sensations felt within, Yujin Ju romanticizes the human experience and emotions, inviting the viewers to paradise. Through the lens of the seven unique artists, this curated arrangement of artworks presents different forms of love and a diverse range of emotions felt within the society.
Also on view at Sarang: Conversation on Love will be immersive elements that encourage the viewers to feel the theme in a multisensory way. Viewers will be invited to engage more intimately with the central theme through direct interaction with Hojung Kim’s specially designed touchable ceramic work. Conveniently placed QR codes alongside each artist’s section will connect to artist-curated online playlists exploring the profound theme of love. The atmosphere will be further enhanced by the scent of love, crafted by a local perfumery brand. Complementing the multisensory experience, an interactive archiving station will be on hand for viewers to share and reflect upon their personal connections and memories associated with the concept of love. By not only looking at the artworks but experiencing the theme as a whole and participating in conversations around various meanings of love, the viewers will become a part of the “wave of love” the show seeks to create.

The initiative is not only about cultural exchange but also about supporting and celebrating the vibrant Korean creative industry in New York. In doing so, the show aspires to underscore ‘sarang’—love—as the most profound universal sentiment, along with the emotions, aesthetics, and hopes that it embodies.

서울과 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 웰컴 컬렉티브는 예술을 도구로 대중과 소통하는
다양한 기획을 전개한다. 이를 위해 형식적으로는 남녀노소, 인종 등 그 어떠한 경계 없이
모두가 환영받는 전시장을 구현하는 한편, 내용적으로는 현대사회에서 회복되어야
한다고 믿는 가치들을 전시로 풀어낸다.
그 첫번째 전시의 키워드는 ‘Sarang/사랑'. 우리는 혐오와 폭력, 값싼 소비로 점철된 현대 사회에 살아가고 있다. 이스라엘과 우크라이나에서는 전쟁으로 매일 사람들이 죽어가고 있고, 미국에서는 혐오 범죄와 총기 난사가 수없이 일어난다. 사랑은 자본주의 사회에서 가장 좋은 소비재로 전락했고, 진정한 사랑은 존재하지 않는다는 회의주의가 만연하다.
그러나, 웰컴은 사랑이 모든 것을 이기고, 모든 것을 회복시키는 힘이라 믿는다. 자신에 대한 사랑, 타인에 대한 사랑, 자연에 대한 사랑, 신에 대한 사랑. 그 사랑의 주체와 대상은 개인마다 다르지만, 메마른 잎에 단비가 내리면 푸른 잎으로 살아나듯 사랑은 우리의 인생을 지속시키고 살리는 가장 반가운 단비이자 원동력이라 믿는다.
이번 전시를 통해 작가들은 ‘사랑’을 자신만의 조형언어와 주제로 풀어낼 것이다. 작지만 가장 소중한 존재인 반려묘와 아가페적 사랑을 표현한 캘빈 킴, 작가가 사랑하는 자연에서 착안한 색과 물성에 대한 연구가 집약된 도자 설치작업을 구현한 김호정, ‘세발 자전거'로 대변되는 아버지의 무조건적 사랑과 희생을 영상에 담아낸 이광민, 인간의 삶 속에 함께 하는 자연의 의미와 영원성 속의 사랑을 표현한 나난, 자신과의 고독한 시간과 우주에 대한 사랑을 표현한 사라 리, 사랑에 빠지는 순간을 환상 속 미감으로 표현한 사이먼고, 실존하는 인간 존재의 고독 가운데 존재하는 사랑을 표현한 주유진. 일곱 명의 작가들이 각자 다른 시각으로 풀어낸 작업들은 ‘사랑'이라는 가장 위대한 보편의 언어로 집합되어 관객들에게 전달 될 것이다.
특별히 이번 전시는 후각, 청각적으로도 관람할 수 있도록 구현되었고, 관객 참여형 메세지 보드를 통해 관객들 스스로 사랑에 대한 고찰을 유도한다. 또한 뉴욕 거주 한인 크리에이터들과 협업한 마케팅 캠페인과 패널 토크 동을 통해 관객들이 전시장에서 경험한 ‘사랑의 파장’이 전시장 내부에서 그치는 것이 아니라 일상속으로 퍼져나가게 할 것이다. 공감각적 전시경험을 통해 관객들은 온전한 사랑의 바다에 빠져 헤엄치며, ‘사랑의 바다'에서 큰 위로와 회복의 순간을 맞이할 것이다.
